When Riding Your Harley Davidson Trike Remember Safety First
Riding a motorcycle is a great way to spend some time. But it can also be one of the most dangerous ways to spend your time. Keeping the potential hazards of riding a motorcycle in mind at all times can help you avoid accidents and stay alive, and safety on a Harley Davidson trike is no different.
Riding a trike does give you a small leg up in the safety category. Trikes are three-wheeled creatures, which makes them automatically more stable than two-wheelers. This added stability translates into a lesser risk of falling onto its side, which in turn means less chance of a rider being trapped under it or slid into danger. Trikes don’t require people to hold them up when stopped, which can reduce the risk to those who are not physically strong enough to have good control of the bike in that situation.
Many trikes these days come directly from the dealership as a three-wheeled machine. There are still a few options for turning an existing motorcycle into a trike with a purchased kit, however. If you choose to go this route, consider hiring a licensed and trained mechanic to do it for you, because improperly installing the kit could be extremely dangerous. If you buy a pre-made machine, make sure to choose a reputable dealership.
Give yourself a chance to make the adjustment from motorcycle to trike safely. There are some differences between the two, and you’ll need to get used to them before you’re as proficient on your trike as you were on your bike. Make sure that you put your trike in park when you leave it standing, or it might run away. And be sure to practice your steering carefully, so that you don’t accidentally swerve into traffic.

Certain models are safer than others, just like in cars and motorcycles, and knowing ahead of time what you’re getting can ensure you choose the safest option. The small amount of time it takes to do this research is worth taking.
Maintenance is a major safety factor in any automobile or bike. Keeping the tire pressure up, the engine serviced and the belts up to date will help to prevent accidents caused by suddenly breaking parts. Check that your mirrors are in the right positions before riding, and try not to miss a service appointment date.
If you are currently using an old helmet, throw it out and buy a new Harley motorcycle helmet. The newer materials in newer helmets are better at protecting your head, and it’s worth it to have the best possible gear between your head and whatever it might bang into.
The best clothing for riding a motorcycle trike is something that can protect you from road rash. Leather is popular. Road rash might seem like a trivial concern, but it can be serious, depending on how much of your body it covers. Remember that safety on a Harley Davidson trike is not optional, and you won’t regret it.
